Lateral Bends

Lateral Bends is an exercise for the oblique abdominals and a little know muscle called the Quadratus Lumborum. We perform this exercise in a continuous, repeating motion.

This exercise may have benefits for the health of the discs of your spine, which are called intertebral discs. The inside of a intervertebral discs is called the nucleus pulposus (NP). The nucleus pulposus does not receive direct blood flood. Instead, it relies on diffusion to bring in nutrients, and clear wastes away. A 2015 award winning paper showed that dynamic loading of the spine increases the nutrient supply into the nucleus pulposus. We believe that this movement can also facilitate the diffusion of nutrients into the intervertebral discs.
